About British Benevolent Society

The British Benevolent Society (BBS) is a 501(c)3 charity whose aim is to provide assistance to sick and destitute British subjects who are transient or living in California. We work closely with the British Consulate, and since 1858 our wonderful volunteers have helped hundreds of British citizens.

Annual Christmas Dinner

The BBS held its annual Christmas dinner at the Cliff House overlooking the ocean in San Francisco on December 2nd, 2015. It was a great night attended by members and guests and the British Consul General, Priya Guha, as our special guest. There were many great raffle items donated by members and local companies. Christmas dinner was delicious and all enjoyed singing some favorite Christmas carols! Visit this website for details about the next Christmas event in December 2016!IMG_0594Cliff House

Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance

Sunday, November 8, 2015 3 pm
Royal British Legion Service of Remembrance. This annual service commemorates and honors all those who have lost their lives in armed conflict. The men and women of the Cathedral Camerata sing, joined by local military bands and color guards in moving, solemn pagentry. The service was originally conceived as a commemoration of the war dead of the first World War; but after the Second World War the scope of the ceremony was extended to focus on the nation’s dead of both World Wars, and in 1980 it was widened once again to all who have suffered and died in conflict in the service of their country and to all who mourn them. The service is organized by a variety of British organizations, principally the Royal British Legion and the Queen’s Club. It follows a pattern that is familiar to many British people, including poppies falling while Amazing Grace is played on the bagpipes. – See more at: Festival of Remembrance

Annual General Meeting 2015

A very successful and enjoyable Annual General Meeting was held on May 5th in San Francisco.  Special guest, Priya Guha, the British Consul General, thanked the BBS for their hard work helping British Nationals in desperate need.  She went on to say, the value and importance of the BBS will continue to grow in line with the increase in international travel by UK citizens.

Happily the BBS is a charity going from strength to strength.  Awareness and membership are growing supported by increased social/networking events, the website and the use of marketing materials.

The financial fund is also growing due to strategic and careful investment.  And thanks to the generosity of Dilys Jackson-Lembe, the BBS is developing a proactive outreach program to further increase its support of British Nationals.

Good news all round and a wonderful evening!
